はじめに
京都での「新選組展 2022」が終わりました。この展示会で紹介された近藤勇の書翰には、彼の高度な政治思想が記されていることが紹介され話題になりました。
元治元年6月5日（1864年7月8日）におこった池田屋事件も、小説やドラマの影響で池田屋だけが取り上げられることが多いのですが、実際は数日間、京都中で一・会・桑勢力による過激浪士の摘発活動が行われていたようです。
池田屋事件時に書かれた小松帯刀書翰
2001年に刊行された『玉里島津家史料十』に掲載された補輯文書586番「小松帯刀書翰 宛名無し 祇園祭ノ事」と表題された史料が翻刻掲載されました。この表題は玉里島津家が整理した際につけられたものです。
この書翰の日付は6月8日となっているだけで年次がありません。玉里島津家ではこれを文久3年と整理しました。ただし、刊本の目次（玉里島津家の目録による）のところには文久三年（？）とされています。
【小松書翰原文】
「尚々、時下随分御保養被成度 （中略） 然は爰許之形行ハ別紙を以御問合申上侯通ニ御座侯、此両日ハ中々暑サ厳敷御座候、此方ハか様之暑ハ無キ事と存じ侯処．思之外ニ御座侯、其上御長屋木陰ハこれなく照抜二而厳敷御座候、暑中ハ其御元御浦山ニ御座侯、昨日ハ祗薗祭ニ而誠ニ賑々敷御座侯、別紙申上侯通錦へ御客様有之、五日之夜より夜明打続キ、昨朝より昨夜も深更迄御客様真ニ閉口ニ御座候、御推察可被下候、今日迄ハ未くたひれ居申候、細事ハ後便と申上越候 （後略） 六月八日 小松帯刀」
【現代語訳】
「くれぐれも、いまはゆっくりと保養されますよう ≪中略≫ さて、直近の動静については別紙でもって御問合内容については申し上げたとおりです。この両日は中々に暑さ厳しいです。こちらがこのように暑いことは無いと思っていたのですが、思いの外でした。その上、藩邸の長屋は木陰がなく、陽ざしが直にあたり厳しいです。暑いうちはそちらが羨（うらや）ましく思います。昨日は祇園祭で、まことに賑やかでした。別紙に申し上げた通り、錦（藩邸）へ御客様があり、５日の夜から（６日の）夜明けまでつづき、また昨日（７日）の朝より、夜更けまで御客様があり、まことに閉口しました。御推察下さい。今日（８日）もまだくたびれています。細かい事は後便で申し上げます。 ≪後略≫ 六月八日 小松帯刀」

４月、久光は次男の久治と小松帯刀に後事を託して帰藩

10月、上京（このとき以後、御花畑屋敷を寓居とするか）

書翰内容の分析
小松は夏の京都の暑さに参っていたようです。宛先人物は保養先にいるようで、かなりうらやましがっています。この書きぶりから相手は小松と同格の親しい人物のようです。玉里島津家史料にはいっていたということは、久光の側近として鹿児島にいた人物だろうと思われます。この時期、大久保が久光とともに鹿児島に帰っていますので、大久保に宛てたものかも知れません。次に大久保が上京するのはこの翌年１月のことです。
この時、小松は藩邸の長屋住まいであることが確かめられます。藩邸には木陰がないとしているので、完成したばかりで植栽も乏しい二本松藩邸でしょう。
「長屋」のことは桐野作人氏の『さつま人国誌 幕末・明治編』の46pに、今回の書翰から１月後の７月９日付けの妻のお近に宛てた手紙の中にでてきます。「拙者御長屋は随分かぜ通り仕合わせに候」とあるそうです。実際は書翰にあるとおり暑さに参っているのですが、健康を気遣う妻にはこのように書くしかなかったのでしょう。お近も京都の暑さが尋常ではないのを聞いていたと思われます。以前、このお近への手紙の内容だけでは小松が長屋住まいであったことは断言できないとも考えたことがありますが、今回の書翰の内容から言って、宿所にしていた長屋は完成したばかりの二本松藩邸内の長屋であった蓋然性が高くなりました。
ところが、この時、小松は錦藩邸に呼び出されて５日の夜から７日の夜遅くまで丸２日以上にわたって来客の対応を強いられています。たしかに錦藩邸は長刀鉾の至近にあり、祇園囃子もよく聞こえたことでしょう。そのすぐ側で小松は来客の対応に追われています。
また、たびたびの訪問があったように書かれているのでむしろ、小松の対応をみて浪士を匿っていないかと疑われていた可能性も物語る史料になりうるのではないかと思います。
在京トップとして
このあと、小松は御花畑に滞在していた久治に随行して８月には帰藩し、禁門の変の対応に対して藩主から感状をもらっています。また、貞姫入輿を通じて近衞家からの覚えもめでたく、家紋使用も許されており、10月に上京してきたときには名実ともに在京トップとなりました。そして近衞家別邸御花畑に寓居しはじめたと考えられます。
なお、相国寺には参予会議前の久光上京に随行してきた小松の宿舎として薩摩藩から二本松藩邸に隣接する鹿苑院の借り受けを求める文書が残されています（笹部昌利『幕末動乱の京都と相国寺』2010年）。しかし、実際にそれができたのかどうかは不明です。翌年６、７月の段階で二本松藩邸の長屋にいますので、実際には借り受けず、長屋にはいった蓋然性の方が大きいのではないかと思います。
鹿児島の小松の領地であった日置郡吉利村（現：日置市吉利）には元治２年３月に御花畑の竹を利用してつくられた「天吹」（尺八に似た薩摩の縦笛）が残されていることは、原田良子さんが確かめています。（「薩長同盟締結の地『御花畑』発見」『敬天愛人』34号 2016年）
