寺田屋来訪者の書
寺田屋には現在、先に紹介した樺山資紀のもの以外に、寺田屋を訪問した有力者の書が扁額として飾られています。
「天楽多家 乙巳秋日為 寺田氏 正二位通禧書」(写真1）
東久世通禧（1834/1/1～1912/1/4）の書です。
乙巳を干支年とすれば、新暦1905/2/4から1906/1/24の間になり、旧暦の秋7月～9月は新暦8/1～10/27となる。寺田屋再興は1906(明治39)年5月なので、その前年、再興される前に東久世通禧は訪れていたことになります。寺田氏とあるので、実際に訪問した上で書いたものです。「天楽」とは雅楽のことで、「多家」は雅楽の舞を世襲とする多家を思い起こしますが、芸者の舞や三味線芸が披露される楽しい宴会のことを指すのかも知れません。通禧は竹亭という雅号をもち、写真２の新聞記事にあるように、ことさら風流を楽しむ旅行を好んだ人物のようです。この記事は寺田屋再興後の明治39年12月の記事です。先の書はこの1年あまり前に書いたことになります。すでに、再興年の前年秋頃には宴会を開くことのできる建物があったことを推測させます。
「謙受益 侯爵西郷従徳書」（写真３）
西郷従徳（1878/10/21～1946/2/6）の書です。
従道の嫡男で1902/8/9に父の薨去に伴い侯爵となるので、それ以後の訪問です。内容は書経にある「満招損、謙受益（驕りは損を招き、謙虚は益を受ける）」から採られたものでしょう。父の従道は寺田屋騒動の時に有馬新七に従い、２階にいました。そのことを偲んだことでしょう。
「義烈 竹二郎 書」（写真４）
床次竹二郎（1867/1/6～1935/9/8）の書です。
薩摩出身で、西南戦争後、鹿児島の大久保留守宅を仲間とともにたたき壊した経歴があります。父は薩摩藩士床次正精で、西郷に近かったようですが、西南戦争後、得意の画業に転じました。西郷と面識があり、かつその肖像画を書いたのはこの人だけです。寺田屋の貼り紙では「明治30年頃の政治家 床次竹次郎」とありますが、名前を誤り、さらに明治30年頃は、まだ内務官僚にすぎず、ようやく明治39年に原敬内務大臣（西園寺内閣）の懐刀の内務官僚として中央で活動を始めます。訪問は再興後ということになります。「義烈」の内容からして九烈士を偲んだもので、実際に床次が寺田屋を訪問して書したものでしょう。
このように、寺田屋再興後のみならず、その直前から有力政治家が寺田屋を来訪し、九烈士を偲ぶ書を残していることは注目に値します。勤王の志士の保護者“おとせ”が旧宅の木材をもって再建したものであるからこその訪問だったのでしょう。東久世通禧の訪問のあり方からみても寺田屋再興以前から建物は現存していたとみるべきだと思います。伊助は前に紹介したように再興時の式典で「母の余光」による「貴顕」の方々の庇護への感謝を述べています。
なにより、これらの書はすべて本物であり、史跡寺田屋の実を物語る重要なもので、それらは、経営が寺田家を離れ、何代かにわたって経営者が変わっても受けつがれているのです。
